On Tuesday, an extraordinary rescue was carried out in theAnuradhapura region of Sri Lanka, as reported by FranceInfo. A baby elephant fell into a well while trying to drink and was trapped there for three days.
For three hours, villagers and rangers scrambled to free the pachyderm from muddy waters. Using a digger, rescuers levelled the edges of the well to allow the animal to escape its trap.
A lesson
After delivering the pachyderm, the rangers fired harmless projectiles to scare it and deter it from returning to drink at the well. These blanks had the desired effect because immediately the animal ran to take refuge in the nearest jungle.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in Sri Lanka. Last July, two elephants were rescued from drowning in the open sea, a rescue that required colossal efforts including divers and many boats.
